Women Studies Unit

Introduction

Gender perspective assures that development revenues are accessible to all members of the society, not only those who are in a better position. It also works to assure that development is improving social conditions through enabling and empowering all members of the society to perform their roles and live up to their potentials. Accordingly, sustainable development would be participatory and successful;

The program was developed in collaboration with Unwoman and Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University, UK. The program is two years long and it offers a professional master s degree on gender and development. The program depends on staff from Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Faculty of Arts, as well as invited experts from the field.

Objectives of the program:

        Develop skills needed for implementing policies and facing professional challenges which would eventually benefit the organization\entity

               -    Provide students with knowledge and skills of critical thinking and professional skills using a gender sensitive lens

               -    Enable students to analyze challenges facing sustainable development processes and critically engage in creative solutions

               -    Use and implement gender sensitive applications to understand power dynamics in society

               -    Develop skills needed for professionals working on gender and development such as writing proposals, reports and apply scientific research methodologies

               -    Develop critical analytical skills needed for working in the field inside and outside Egypt.

Intended learning outcomes

           By the successful finish of the program, the graduate should be able to :

            -    Analyze main challenges facing sustainable development

            -    Formulate creative policies capable of facing challenging of development

            -    Bridge the gap between theories, practices and policies

    -    Open to new and diversified disciplines and expand meaning and techniques of developments.

Characteristics of the program

  -   The program adopts a multi-disciplinary approach connecting gender and development from different perspectives. Thus, our pool of students is from different disciplines and majors     working in the field of gender and development

          -    The program teaching staff are from all departments of the faculty of economics and political science, faculty of Arts, Sussex university as well as experts from the field

          -    Teaching is bi-lingual, most of the reading and resources are in English. Visiting professors are expected to teach in English

          -    The program work to develop practical expertise of the students to enable our graduates to work in development field.

 Complementary courses: students who graduated from any disciplines other than economic and political science, are required to finish two complementary courses before beginning the program. The first course is -introduction to statistics- 12 hours- and the second is -introduction to economics and political science 12 hours-.  Students are expected to pass the exam in    the two courses in order to be able to continue the program. Teaching and the examination are conducted prior to the beginning of the first semester.

 

Program duration and structure:

 The program is four semesters, student is expected to finish 45 credit hours. The program is bi-lingual, and students have the choice to write their graduation thesis either in Arabic or English. The following is the details of each semester.

      -     First semester the focus of the first semester is to lay the ground for the students to understand the basic and important theories and applications on gender and  development. Taking into consideration the diversified background of the students, three courses are offered in this semester. Core theory 1, gender practices 1 and  professional skills course. Teaching techniques are highly interactive and depends on mixing between theories and applications throughout the topics discussed 

-   Second semester: Four courses are offered in the second semester. One elective course and three mandatories. During the semester (14 weeks- 3 hours each), students are required to finish core theory 2, gender practices2, qualitative research methodology, and select a course either in macroeconomics and gender or gender, development and conflict.

      -   Third semester: two courses are offered in this semester. One mandatory course on quantitative research methodology and an elective course (economics or political science). Additionally, students are required to finish 6 credit hours of internship, write a report on it and discuss it under the supervision of an assigned professor.

       -     Fourth semester: the final semester is dedicated to writing the graduation thesis. Students should be able to use critically knowledge acquired during the previous semesters and build on the personal experiences and reflections gained through the internship. Oral and public defense is required to pass the graduation thesis at the end of the semester.

       -     Internship: Faculty of economics and political science would work to assist with locating internship posts inside and outside Cairo.
